It has been a disappointing season for Garin who was a top 20 player two years ago, but who is now clinging on to his top 100 status by his fingernails.
And all this from a man who, in the past, has been good enough to reach the quarter-finals of the Masters events in Madrid, and Rome, although they were on his favourite surface of clay.
And it was after leaving clay behind him with his second round defeat in Hamburg, that his struggles really set in, and he failed to win another match until setting foot on Chinese soil.
He managed to arrest that trend by reaching the second round in Zhuhai, but he failed to qualify in Beijing.

Kovacevic Aiming for Amother First
Kovacevic began the year strongly, winning the first two Challenger titles of his career with victories in Cleveland and Waco.
That helped him reach a career high ranking, and a few months later he made his Grand Slam debut as a qualifier at the French Open,, although he then lost in the first round.
He was beaten in the final round of qualifying for his home Grand Slam, but was given a wildcard into the doubles. before again losing in the first round.
Now he can add qualifying for a Masters event in Shanghai to his list of firsts for the year.
Not that the American made it easy for himself. He had to come from behind to beat Alexey Zakharov in a three set battle, and he needed another three sets to beat Li Tu of Australia.

Garin is far more experienced when it comes to events of this nature, and the Chilean will be hoping he can use that to his advantage to deny the American another first, his maiden Masters victory.
