Cori Gauff v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

This is an interesting rivalry with Sakkari having actually won four of their six previous meetings. More recently they played at the Washington Open and Gauff won that encounter.

Gauff v Sakkari Match Winning Odds*

Gauff Quells the Kudermetova Challenge

Veronika Kudermetova had won the Tokyo Open title last week with a win over Jessica Pegula in the final of that tournament and would have given herself a bit of a chance to test the in-form Gauff.

And in the first set, Kudermetova almost did that as she came back from a break down on three separate occasions to push it into a tie-breaker. The Russian player even saved four set-points in the process but once Gauff had edged her out in the tie-breaker there was no looking back for her.

Gauff broke her opponent twice in succession at the start of the second set and ended the match very soon after that, winning 7-6 (5), 6-2.

With that, Gauff has now won 15 matches in a row and 21 off her last 22 matches since her shock first round exit at Wimbledon. Another win beckons for Gauff but she will be up against a resurgent Sakkari.

Sakkari Taken to Three Sets by Wang

Xinyu Wang is an upcoming talent and has risen in the ranks rather well this season. Which is why despite starting out a 2/1 underdog in their third round encounter here, she would have given herself a bit of a chance.

And as was expected, Sakkari faced a stiff challenge from her Chinese opponent, ended up needing two hours and 33 minutes to grab a three-set win.

Sakkari dropped her serve thrice in the encounter too, the same number of times she got the better of her opponent’s serve but what was different was her ability to zero in on the win when the things got a little tough.

At one set apiece, Sakkari broke the match open with a service break in the fourth game of the final set and while she missed six other chances to break Wang and also four match-points to go with that, the Greek number one finished things off soon after that.

Can she now test the in-form Gauff in this one?

Gauff v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

Gauff will not just be a favourite, she will be one to win this in straight sets. Such has been her form all of the post-Wimbledon season it’s tough to see Sakkari stall her chances.
