Playing in the Shanghai Masters for the first time in his career, Casper Ruud made a fantastic start, knocking out the in-form Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round on Froday.

The Norwegian, ranked no. 9th in the world, got 87% of his first serves right and won 85% of points on the back of his first delivery.

He faced one break point in the match, which he could not save. However, he converted 5 of 9 break points that he held to beat the Japanese player 7-5, 6-0 in an hour and 15 minutes.

Ruud is coming off a quarterfinal finish in Beijing, where he won two matches before being knocked out by Carlos Alcaraz.

A finalist at the French Open for the second straight year, Ruud has only done well on clay this year. While he has struggled on other surfaces.

On hard courts, he improved to 10-10 for the season following the second round win in Shanghai.

Can Ruud, who won the Estoril Open title and finished runner-up in Bastad, make it to the fourth round of a Masters tournament for the second time this season. He was a semifinalist in Rome.

Eubanks Rallies Past Hanfmann

World no. 32 Christopher Eubanks got his campaign off to a fine start as he rallied from a set down to beat Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann.

Eubanks, who is playing for the first time since his second round finish at the US Open, needed two hours and eight minutes to score a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. The American served 14 aces and hit 37 winners in the match. He was broken twice but he converted 4 of 11 to knock out the world no. 53.

With the win, Eubanks improved his tour level record to 21-16 in 2023. While overall, he is 39-22 across levels.

It has been a fascinating year for the 27-year-old so far, who won his maiden ATP title in Mallorca, and reached a maiden major quarterfinal at Wimbledon. He also reached his first ever ATP Masters quarterfinal in Miami.
