Grigor Dimitrov v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two men.

Dimitrov Enduring a Tough Run

Ranked as high as three in the world less than 18 months ago, Dimitrov has endured a difficult period since, struggling with form and fitness. He failed to qualify for the ATP Finals last November, and is short of match practice coming into this event.

He made the third round in Brisbane, and then the fourth round in Melbourne, but then missed two months of the season before reappearing in Miami where he went out to Jordan Thompson of Australia.

Clay is arguably his least favourite surface, in part because it mitigates the effect of one of his most powerful weapons, his serve and that could make his Monte-Carlo campaign a big issue. However, he does have a powerful forehand which could be an advantage going into this match.

Berrettini, an Italian Clay Court Specialist

World number 54 Berrettini, like many Italian players is at home on clay, and claimed his only senior ATP tour title to date on that surface, the Swiss Open last July, beating Roberto Bautista-Agut in the final. He also won the ATP Challenger event in San Benedetto on clay in 2017.

This year he enjoyed some success on the Challenger circuit, winning the event in Phoenix, whilst, on the senior ATP tour, he reached the semi-final in Sofia. However, he missed Indian Wells, and was beaten in the first round in Miami by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

At their full tilt, Dimitrov should have no issues with winning this but the fact is a clay-court specialist like Berrettini will test the Bulgarian the way things have been in recent times.

Dimitrov v Berrettini Predictions & Tips

This is a relatively close match to call, at least as far as the bookmakers are concerned. Dimitrov will start the odds-on favourite for the match at 5/6 whilst Berrettini is priced at 6/5.  Dimitrov is the higher ranked player and has the tournament wins, but he has endured a poor run of form in the past year or so. Berrettini’s expertise on clay may level the odds, so this could be a close three set encounter.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 5/4 (Betway)
