Stan Wawrinka v Lucas Pouille Head to Head

These two players haven’t played each other before this.

Wawrinka Slowly, Steadily Improving Rankings

Midway through the previous year, Wawrinka had fallen to outside 250 in the ATP Rankings and struggling to string together tournament appearances. By August he was back in the top 100 before ending the season at number 66th in the world.

This year, the climb back to the top has been steady, and while at times it’s been slower than expected, the former world number three would be happy to have reached 36th in the world for now.

Signs were looking positive for the Swiss player when he made it to the final of the Rotterdam Open but since then, the performances in the following three competitions have tapered off slightly. There was a quarter-final exit at Acapulco and a third loss at Indian Wells – at the hands of Nick Kyrgios and Roger Federer respectively – but what would hurt the most is his opening loss at Miami where he went down to Filip Krajinovic.

Former Semi-Finalist Pouille’s Form Falls Away

Pouile was a semi-finalist at the 2017 Monte-Carlo Masters and had a brilliant run at the Australian Open which he will cherish for a long time. But other than that, his year has been a strange one.

Wins over Borna Coric and Milos Raonic at the Australian Open would have given him confidence but defeats in the first match he’s played in, at the Sydney International before that and Montpellier, Indian Wells and Miami after that Grand Slam onslaught makes it a puzzling set of results.

The Frenchman did not have a great previous season on clay either and that will make it way harder for him going into this encounter.

Wawrinka v Pouille Predictions & Tips

Wawrinka, a former French Open winner, will be a heavy favourite for this one and we expect him to sail through to the second round without too many worries despite his opponent’s Australian Open run.

Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 5/4 (Bovada)
