Marin Cilic v Guido Pella Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, both in Grand Slam events. Cilic won on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows in 2015, whilst Pella got his revenge on the grass at Wimbledon last year. This is their first meeting on clay which should make it even more interesting.

Cilic Enduring a Terrible 2019 So Far

The world number 11 Cilic has had a terrible 2019 so far. He came into the year on a high, having helped Croatia lift the Davis Cup against France last November, but, after getting to the fourth round in Melbourne, he was beaten by Roberto Bautista-Agut.

Since then he has won just one match, his opening encounter in Indian Wells, going out at the first attempt in Dubai and Miami. In the process, he has lost his top-ten ranking for the first time in two years.

Clay does not necessarily suit his game, which is better suited to hard courts, but he has reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros in the past two years, and won both his Davis Cup singles in Paris on that surface. Interestingly, he has also been a quarter-finalist here at the Monte-Carlo Masters at each of the three previous occasions, so it’s not like clay has been his Kryptonite.

Pella, Boosted by Maiden ATP Victory

Argentine Pella is close to his all-time career high ranking in singles, and a large part of that can be attributed to his form on clay.

Prior to the start of this year, he had made 3 senior ATP finals, all on that surface, and lost them all. He then reached the final of the Cordoba Open in February before losing to compatriot Juan Ignacio Londero, before finally getting his hands on a trophy, winning the Brazil Open last month.

He also has 11 clay court titles to his name on the ATP Challenger tour, the most recent of which was the Uruguay Open last November.

He demonstrated his form on clay on Sunday, beating Lazlo Dere of Serbia, although he was made to work for his win after dropping the first set.

Cilic v Pella Predictions & Tips

Cilic is the slight odds-on favourite for this match at 13/15, whilst Pella is priced at 11/10. Given the poor form that Cilic is on, and Pella’s propensity for clay courts, there would appear to be a chance of an upset in the match, and the Argentine has a big opportunity to progress.

Tip: Pella to win: 1/1 (888Sport)
