Karen Khachanov v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in last year’s US Open, where Khachanov won a second round encounter in straight sets.

Khachanov’s One Bright Spot was Indian Wells

The 22-year old Russian had endured a difficult year before getting to Indian Wells, with first round defeats in Sofia, Rotterdam and Dubai a poor return for somebody of his calibre.

However, he found some form in California, with a run to the quarter-finals, beating John Isner on the way, before losing to Rafael Nadal. However, he very much reverted to type in Miami, going out meekly to Jordan Thompson of Australia in the second round, and has not played since.

He has little form on clay, with all four of his senior ATP titles coming on hard courts, but he did win on the surface in his junior days, winning the Challenger event in Samarkand in 2016.

Italian qualifier Sonego

Ranked just outside the world’s top 100, Sonego has little form on the senior ATP tour, playing most of his tennis on the junior circuits. Clay is his preferred surface – he has contested eight titles on the surface, winning four of them with his most recent victory coming in Genoa last September.

To warm-up for Monte Carlo he entered the clay court event in Marrakesh last week, and reached the quarter-final before going down to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. To get this far he had to progress through two qualifying rounds before entering the main draw, where he had an impressive opening round victory over compatriot Andreas Seppi in straight sets.

Khachanov v Sorengo Predictions & Tips

Khachanov is the odds-on favourite for this match at 9/20, whilst Sorengo is priced at 91/50. The Russian is the higher ranked and seeded player and should have too much for the Italian qualifier, but the match may be closer than the odds suggest.

Tip: Khachanov to win in two sets: 9/5 (bet365)
