Gilles Simon v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

The two players have met five times on the ATP Tour and Simon has won all of those matches. He is heading into this fixture on the back of a 5-0 lead he built since 2009. And interestingly, all of their meetings took place on the outdoor clay surface.

They last met in the 2012 Madrid Masters where Simon won in three sets.

Fognini, Coming in With Massive Form Struggles

Fognini had a sensational season last year – the best one of his career, after winning three singles title and collecting a runner-up trophy. While many would expect him to continue along the same lines this year too, it hasn’t been the case clearly.

He has been struggling with his form since the start of the year. He made it to the third round in the ATP Auckland and Melbourne, losing to Philipp Kohlschreiber and Pablo Carreno Busta.

In the South American swing, his performance got worse as he lost in the first round in all the three events – ATP Cordoba, Buenos Aires, and Rio. Things didn’t change much in the Sunshine Doubles too, with his best run coming in the Miami Open where he reached the third round.

In Monte-Carlo, he defeated the Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev in the first round in three sets.

Simon, Off to a Positive Start on Clay

Unlike many players in the draw, Simon started his clay season in Marrakech last week, where he reached the semifinal. While he eventually lost to Pablo Andujar, the run he had there helped him get some traction to perform well in Monte Carlo.

In addition to this, the Frenchman also reached the quarterfinal in the ATP Marseille and third round in Indian Wells. These are the highlights of his season so far, given that he hasn’t been that good of a form either.

Simon started his campaign in the event against the Aussie Alexei Popyrin and moved past him 7-5, 6-1.

The 34-year-old has a win-loss record of 11-9, which is far from his usual standards.

Simon v Fognini Predictions & Tips

While Simon holds a 5-0 lead over his Italian adversary, things are quite different this time around. They haven’t met each other on the tour in over six years and right now, both of them haven’t been in that great of a form.

This makes it an evenly matched fixture that can very well go either way. However, Simon will be the favourite here owing to his slightly better momentum.

Tip: Simon to win: 3/4 (888Sport)
