Rafael Nadal v Leonardo Mayer Head to Head

The pair have met five times before, with the Spaniard winning on every occasion. In fact, only once has Mayer in those matches even claimed a set off Nadal, and that was in the US Open in 2017.

Nadal Looking to Bounce Back from Monte-Carlo Shock Defeat

Nadal has won this tournament 11 times, and it has been four years since anybody but him lifted the trophy in Barcelona. Much though was the same about his record in Monte-Carlo last week when, seemingly on course for a 12th title and fourth in a row, he was shocked in the semi-final of the event by the eventual winner Fabio Fognini.

He will want to put that right immediately ahead of the Masters events to come in Madrid and Rome, and, of course, for the King of Clay, the main event of the season, Roland Garros, where he will also be aiming for a 12th title.

Nadal rarely loses on clay, and for it to happen twice in a few days is virtually unprecedented.

Mayer, Argentine Outsider with Little Chance

Mayer has had a disappointing 2019 so far, with his best result coming on a doubles’ court where, with his partner, Joao Sousa, he reached the semi-final of the Australian Open. Singles results have proved harder to come by for the world number 63, with quarter-finals in Auckland and Sao Paolo the best he has to show for his efforts so far.

Last week in Monte-Carlo he failed to get out of the qualifying competition, but has at least got one win under his belt here in Barcelona, after he beat Marius Copil of Romania in three sets on Monday.

And now he will be playing against a top-notch clay-court player who is baying for blood after the semi-final shocker last week. Things might not get too pleasant for the Argentine.

Nadal v Mayer Predictions & Tips

Nadal is the overwhelming favourite to win not only this match but the tournament as a whole, making Pella a rank outsider for this contest. Nadal has been shocked once on a clay court in the last week, but you will find long odds on Mayer repeating the feat.

Tip: Under 18.5 games in the match: 4/6 (Betfair)
