David Goffin v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, with Goffin winning all of their previous encounters easily. In fact, only in the first of those encounters, in the 2014 Miami Masters, did the German even claim a set off his Belgian opponent. This though will be their first meeting on clay.

Goffin Looking for Form in Barcelona

Goffin was one of the seeded players that the unfancied Serb, Dusan Lajovic, left in his wake in the course of his unlikely run to the final in Monte-Carlo last week.

It was just the latest disappointment in a year that his seen him record a string of disappointing results, with first round defeats in Doha, Montpellier and Indian Wells.

On the plus side he did reach the semi-final in Marseille, and the quarter-final of the Challenger event in Phoenix. But he is still searching for the form that once made him a top ten player.

Struff Hunting for Another Major Scalp

World number 51 Struff has enjoyed some big moments on court this year, which have included reaching the semi-final in Auckland, and then his run to the fourth round in Indian Wells, in the course of which he handed a surprise defeat to his compatriot, world number three, Alexander Zverev.

Last week in Monte-Carlo, he claimed another high profile scalp, beating the highly rated Canadian Denis Shapovalov, before losing to Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in the third round – the same stage at which Goffin went out.

He got his campaign in Barcelona off to a comfortable start, beating Hugo Dellien of Bolivia for the loss of just four games, and will enter his match against Goffin in confident mood. That said, Goffin will be one to beat given his much higher ranking.

Goffin v Struff Predictions & Tips

Based on his seeding and their previous head-to-head record Goffin will start the odds-on favourite for this match. The Belgian has not been in the best of form this year but should be able to avoid becoming the German’s last high profile scalp.

Tips: Goffin to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
