Borna Coric v Lucas Pouille Head to Head

These two players have played each other three times. Coric currently leads the head-to-head 2-1. All three meetings were played on hard courts with the Frenchman getting his first win over the Croat at the 2019 Australian Open. This will the first time they will meet on clay.

Coric Could Be The Best Of The Rest

Borna Coric has been tipped by many to be tennis’ next top superstar. However, despite making some inroads to back up that notion, Coric is still a few years away from taking over that mantle. In fact, the young Croat had to watch over NextGen star Stefanos Tsitsipas thrive this year and passed him in the rankings.

Coric’s boasts an impressive resume against the Big Four that only few can dare to have. He beat Nadal in Basel while he was a teenager.

He also stunned Murray in Dubai for the loss of four games, and then beat the Brit yet again at the Madrid Open in 2017. The World No.15 also has multiple victories over Roger Federer including a three -set win in Halle final last year. Although Coric is yet to beat Djokovic, their match in Monte Carlo last year was very close and intense.

But while Coric has been consistent in getting good results against the best players in the world, he is yet to tranform those performcnes against lesser-ranked oppoennts. Case in point is his quartefinal defeat to Filip Krajinoic at the Hungarian Open a fortnight ago.

Pouille, The Lost Person After Melbourne

Lucas Pouille started the 2019 season in the best possible manner. He reached the semifinals of the Australian Open taming out Borna Coric and Milos Raonic in the process. The Frenchman ran out of steam in the last four and Novak Djokovic barely broke any sweat in dismantling him in straight sets.

Of course there is no shame in losing to the World No.1 especially when playing in your maiden Grand Slam semifinal, it is Pouille’s form after Melbourne that has been alarming.  At times, it feels like the 25-year-old never really left Australia because he never won a tennis match since!

The Frenchman decided to play a Challenger event before Madrid in order to get match wins under his belt and improve his shuttered confidence if at all he had any. That decision seems to come to fruition as Pouille managed to reach the final at the ATP Challenger event in Bordeaux (he is set to play the final against Mikael Ymer today).

Coric v Pouille Predictions & Tips

Pouille is yet to win a tour-level match since beating Coric at the 2019 Australian Open. The Croat will have that stat at the back of his mind and will be fearful of a repeat. With that considered, Coric is a strong favorite here because of two reasons.

The first is Pouille’s winless streak, and secondly is his participation at the Challenger event in Bordeaux meaning he will have less than 24 hours to fly to Madrid. Surely, there is only one winner.

Tip: Coric to win in straight sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
