This will be the first time that the former French Open champion and Townsend will be facing off in a match at the highest level.
Muguruza’s Struggles Offset by Monterrey Win
For a player who has won the French Open in the past – and for someone who has been ranked one in the world – Muguruza has had her issues this season but more so on clay. She was dumped out in the first round at the Madrid Open by Petra Martic before she won two matches in Rome before Victoria Azarenka sent her packing in the third.
The Spaniard’s form issues have been well-chronicled ever since the latter stages of the previous season and that has seen her slide from world number one to 19th on the WTA rankings. However, every now and then there is that glimpse of what Muguruza can manage at her best and that was on display at Monterrey earlier this year.
The court wasn’t clay, but a title win there should have pulled her back into the reckoning in the clay-court swing. However, that hasn’t quite happened and the trepidation will be back for Muguruza and while she starts favourite in this encounter, it might not be very easy as the tournament grows.
Townsend Trying to Find Her Feet at ITF
With first round defeats at Auckland and the Australian Open earlier this year and then again at the Indian Wells Open, Taylor Townsend has had to return back to the lower circuit to try and find her feet.
Since that switch, she has had a reasonable three competitions, including one at Charleston, which she went on to win. That title victory was sandwiched by two quarter-final exits but can she translate that form into something more potent at the French Open? It seems highly unlikely.
