Frances Tiafoe v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The two men have played each other twice before, although both matches were on Sousa’s preferred surface of clay. he beat the American in the final of the Estoril Open last year, and again in the Rome Masters last month.

Tiafoe, Number Two American Player

The number two American player behind John Isner, Tiafoe grew up on hard courts, and that he has had the most success to date, winning his maiden title at Delray Beach in 2018.

Like his opponent, he was beaten in the first round at Roland Garros, losing a five setter to Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic, and his best results in 2019 have been two quarter-finals, one in Miami, on his preferred hard surface, and another on the clay of Estoril.

Like Sousa, he has made the third round of Wimbledon once, last year.

Sousa, Best Portuguese Player Ever

30 year old Sousa is widely regarded as the best Portuguese player ever, and has won three senior ATP titles, all of them won on his favourite surface of clay. He is much less assured on a grass court as can be seen from his rcord at Wimbledon, where he has been beaten at the first round stage four of the five times that he has made the main draw, the exception being in 2016 when he progressed to the third round.

His recent results have not been encouraging coming into this event – he was beaten in the first round at Roalnd Garros by Pablo Carreno Busta, and lost at the same stage in Barcelona and Monte Carlo, although he did, at least, progress to the second round in Rome, Madrid, Estoril and Geneva.

Tiafoe v Sousa Predictions & Tips

Tiafoe is the odds-on favourite at 1/2 whilst Sousa is priced at 23/12. Sousa has won their previous two encounters, but that was on his preferred surface of clay. He is less sure-footed on grass, which hands the initiative to the American, who should win in straight sets.

Tip: Tiafoe to win in two sets: 5/6 (888Sport)
