Daniil Medvedev v Lucas Pouille Head to Head

These two players have met each other on three occasions and surprisingly it is Lucas Pouille who has a dominant 3-0 winning record over the Russian.

Medvedev Back On Grass After Horrible French Open Defeat

If there is a word to describe the manner of Daniil Medvedev’s exit from the 2019 French Open it is bedlam. The young Russian had walked in to Paris as a man with genuine interest of upsetting the big guns and go deep into the second week at the very least.

The hype was partly believable following Medvedev’s brilliant results prior to Roland Garros. He won 8 matches during the European clay-court swing, a streak which included a semifinal run to Monte Carlo where he stunned World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the quarters and then finished runner-up in Barcelona to eventual French Open finalist Dominic Thiem.

Medvedev had won only two main draw matches on clay prior to 2019 and it was clear to see the remarkable progress he made on the surface. Yet, despite a run of solid results on the dirt, he suffered a shocking defeat at Roland Garros to the Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the opening round. What made the loss even unbearable was the fact that Medvedev let slip a two-set lead against a player whose credentials on clay are not the best.

But can Medvedev return to winning ways on his first appearance on grass?

Pouille Eyeing Fourth Straight Win Over Russian

French wildcard Lucas Pouille accepted a late invitation to compete in a tournament he last won two years ago. Pouille’s form had fallen off a cliff following his fantastic run to the last four of the Australian Open earlier this year. He never won a tour-level match until the Madrid Open.

In fact, prior to Madrid he elected to play the Challenger event in Bordeaux in an effort to accumulate match-wins for his shuttered confidence.

While Pouille would go on to win the title in his home country, he failed to translate those performances on tour where he managed only two wins between Madrid and Roland Garros.

As mentioned, Pouille is a former champion in Stuttgart and he does have an affection of the surface. When he won in Stuttgart in 2016, he went on to reach his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon of that same year. This will be the fourth time he is appearing at the Mercedes Cup and he will only hope it would be end perfectly just as it did in 2016.

Medvedev v Pouille Predictions & Tips

Pouille is slightly overpriced to win in this encounter especially when you consider his great record over the Russian. While Medvedev is no slouch on grass with his booming first serve and powerful ground strokes, he will find it very hard to deal with the Frenchman’s creativity and flow.
