Karen Khachanov v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

The two men have never played each other before on the senior tour. However, they did meet on the junior circuits twice, with their head to head record standing at one win apiece.

Khachanov, A Hard Court Specialist

Khachanov is very much a hard court specialist – no player in 2018 won more matches on that surface than him. Despite that, he achieved his best result of 2019 on the clay of Roland Garros, where he reached the quarter-final before losing to Dominic Thiem, by no means a disgrace.

A reasonable grass court player who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, he was beaten in the second round in Stuttgart last week by the surprise winner, Matteo Berrettini. However, he did get off to a winning start in Halle on Monday, although he was given a stiff test by the Serb, Miomir Kecmanovic, before his superior serve prevailed – he served ten aces in the match.

Struff Playing in Front of Home Crowd

Local favourite Struff came into Halle off the back of a run to the semi-final in the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart last week where, like Khachanov, he lost to Berrettini. That equalled his best performance of the year so far in a tournament, with his other occasion when he reached the last four of an event coming back in January in Auckland.

Like Khachanov he is not known as a grass player either – he has a 3-6 win/loss record at Wimbledon to date. However, he got his campaign here off to a comfortable start on Tuesday, beating the Serb Laslo Dere in straight sets.

Khachanov v Struff Predictions & Tips

Khachanov is the marginal odds-on favourite to win at 83/100 whilst Struff is priced at even money. The German has the advantage of playing in front of his home crowd but Khachanov has the better record on grass and should win, although it might go to three sets.

Tip: Khachanov to win in three sets: 7/2 (888Sport)
