Borna Coric v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The two men have never played each other once before. This will be the first meeting between the world number 14, and Sousa ranked 57 places below him in the world.

Coric, Defending Champion Made to Fight in First Round

The defending champion from last year, Coric was made to fight in his first round match against the Spaniard Jaume Munar, with the 7-6, 6-3 scoreline not telling the entire story of the match. In fact, there was only one break point in the entire match which Coric secured in the second set, enabling him to close out a match where there was very little to choose between the two men.

Nevertheless, he will have ben glad to get that match under his belt, and can add that to his run to the semi-finals in s-Hertogenbosch.  as he prepares for another tilt at Wimbledon, where his record, historically is terrible, having only ever won one match in South London in four attempts.

Sousa, Enjoying His Stay in Germany

The most successful Portuguese player ever, Sousa’s game, which is based on a strong serve and forehand, seems made for grass, although he professes that he is most at home on a clay court.

Despite that, however, Sousa has already enjoyed a successful start to his week in Halle. He actually began his campaign in qualifying on Saturday, beating the Italian Jannik Sinner in three sets, after dropping the first. Then he played the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in the final qualifying round on Sunday, and again showed the necessary fortitude to battle back having dropped the first set.

That saw him play Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the first round, one of the most improved players on tour from the earlier part of the season, and he produced an impressive performance to beat the world 53 in straight sets, despite being out-served by the Pole.

Coric v Sousa Predictions & Tips

Coric is the odds-on favourite for this match at 3/11, whilst Sousa is priced at 33/10. Sousa has already won three matches in Germany this week, whilst Coric had his opening struggles against Munar on Tuesday. However, the defending champion should have enough weapons to progress further this time
