Nikoloz Basilashvili v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 27-year-old Georgian and the German, two years his senior.

Basilashvili, A Winner in Hamburg

Basilashvili made history last July when he became the first Georgian player to win  a senior ATP title when he claimed victory in the German Open.

He has since gone on to prove that win was no fluke by adding a second title at the China Open last October, and then returning to Germany last month to successfully defend his title in Hamburg. He has also reached the semi-final this year in Lyon, and the quarters in both Doha and Dubai.

Those results have helped propel him to his highest ever career ranking, and he will be looking to make another impression at the US Open, having reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows last year.

However, he did not have things all his own way in his first round victory over Dusan Lajovic in Montreal on Monday, dropping the first set to the Serb before bouncing back to take the next two. He served no less than nine double faults, so knows he needs to tighten up that aspect of his game.

Struff, Experienced German Finally Getting His Rewards

Although Struff has been a solid player on tour for many years, it has only been in 2019 that he has become a consistent performer, and is beginning to reap the rewards for all his efforts.

Like Basilashvili, he is now close to his highest ever world ranking, and whilst that, in part, is due to his performance at the French Open in June where he reached the fourth round, his best ever run in a Grand Slam results, there have also been several other notable achievements.

These include semi-final appearances in Auckland and Stuttgart, and a victory over compatriot Alexander Zverev in Indian Wells.

The most recent of these impressive victories came on Monday, when he thrashed the vastly experienced Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets, dropping just four games in the match.

Basilashvili v Struff Predictions & Tips

Despite being the lower ranked and non-seeded player, Struff is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 10/17, whilst Basilashvili is priced at 17/11. These odds may reflect the ease with which the German beat Tsonga whereas Basilashvili struggled to overcome Lajovic. There may also be a feeling that Struff is more suited to hard courts than the Georgian. However, it is likely to be a close encounter, which may well involve three sets.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 1/1 (888Sport)
