Sloane Stephens v Marie Bouzkova Head to Head
This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.
Stephens, Seeking a Revival in Toronto
Just last year, the American was having a terrific time on the tour: she was a part of the top five and reached some big finals like those in the French Open, WTA Finals, and the Rogers Cup. However, a lot has changed for the 26-year-old American in that span of one year.
She has had a very quiet season up until now, with her most notable run coming in Paris where she was a quarterfinalist. Starting the year on a rather shaky note, she found some solace on clay but that quickly came to an end, without a single title.
Her performance on grass was a bit disappointing, to say the least. When the hard court swing started again, Stephens participated in the Citi Open as an overwhelming favourite. But her first-round opponent Rebecca Peterson had different plans for her, as she stunned the American in straight sets.
Stephens has enjoyed a bye into the second round and will be hoping to repeat her last year’s run in the Canadian Open and go the distance this time. But given her form, things will not be easy for her.
Bouzkova, Looking Confident
Bouzkova, who is just 21 years of age, earned herself a ticket into the main draw in this year’s Rogers Cup as a qualifier. Following a superb performance, she started her campaign against the Canadian wildcard Leylah Fernandez and dispatched her 6-0, 6-1.
The young Czech has been absolutely relentless this season as she continues to work hard and become a better player. Playing in a mix of ITF and WTA events, she has had some success in the former – she reached a couple of semifinals and also won the ITF Nur-Sultan.
As for the WTA circuit, her best run came in Wimbledon and Brisbane, where she reached the second round.
Stephens v Bouzkova Prediction & Tips
If Bouzkova can replicate the scintillating performance from her win over Fernandez here, then Stephens is in a world of trouble. The American hasn’t been that sharp of late and Bouzkova, riding high on energy and confidence, can very well make things precarious for her opponent. This should be an interesting match to follow.
