Karen Khachanov v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

Khachanov and Wawrinka will meet for the third time. The Swiss superstar has beaten his Russian opponent in their previous two matches, both on hard-courts.

Can Khachanov Rise To The Occasion This Week?

Karen Khachanov made a slow start to the year, falling in the first round of four of his first five tournaments. It was a surprise drop in form considering that he finished the 2018 season strongly where he beat four top-10 players (including the World No.1 Novak Djokovic) en route to his maiden Masters 1000 crown at the Paris Masters.

But the Russian has been a disappointment during the first half of a tumultuous season. His highlight so far was in reaching the quarterfinal of Indian Wells where he pushed Rafael Nadal to two tiebreaks and also managed to make the last eight at the French Open – the furthest he has ever been in a major.

Despite compiling an ordinary grass-court season, Khachanov was able to break into the world’s top-10 for the first time, but in fairness it was due to those above him missing from action for a lengthy period of time rather than any spectacular performances by him.

Will he be able to take advantage of what looks like an open field in the bottom half of the draw?

Wawrinka Seeking A Third Win Over Russian

Stan Wawrinka will be looking to extend his positive head-to-head in the series to 3-0 when he plays Khachanov. The 34-year-old beat Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets on Monday in a near-impeccable performance. Wawrinka served 12 aces and won 86% of first serve points won.

The Swiss’ 2019 season bears comparison to Khachanov’s, but he has recorded some decent results along the way. The former world no.3 reached the final in Rotterdam and quarterfinals in Doha, Madrid and Roland Garros.

This is Wawrinka’s first tournament participation since losing in the second round of Wimbledon to big serving American Sam Querrey. The three-time Grand Slam winner is a former semifinalist at the Rogers Cup (2016), but his record in Canada has been patchy over the years.

Khachanov v Wawrinka Predictions & Tips

This will be such an excellent match-up for those who love raw power. It will be an entertaining contest as both players are equipped with easy power from the baseline and have the ability to strike damaging shots from either wing. Their two matches in St. Petersburg and Doha were both closely contested and this one here is likely to follow the same pattern.

Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 8/13 (888Sport)
