Fabio Fognini v Tommy Paul Head to Head

This will be a first-ever meeting between Fognini and Paul.

Fognini Vulnerable To An Upset

Fabio Fognini’s inability to defend his Los Cabos Open title meant that he dropped out of the world’s top-10 heading to Montreal this week.

The fiery Italian usually performs exceptionally well during the brief post-Wimbledon summer clay swing in Europe, but played dismally in Hamburg where he was a former champion, and retired midway through his second round match in Umag against Stefano Travaglia.

It has been a strange old season for the 32-year-old, but it should come as no surprise considering his enigmatic nature. After enduring one of his poorest start to a season in a long time, he sensationally stunned the tennis world when he won the Monte Carlo Masters in April. That week in the Principality ignited Fognini’s 2019 season and served as a catalyst towards attaining a top-10 ranking.

However, things have not looked rosy for the man from Sanremo. He is yet to hit the dizzying heights of his Monte Carlo success and that may not entirely happen this week since he has been handed a tough draw.

Paul Has The Game To Upset Fognini

American qualifier Tommy Paul is aiming to claim arguably his biggest result of his career at tour-level. He earned his date with Fognini with a rapid 6-1 6-2 over local hopeful Brayden Schnur, and that was after coming through two gruelling three-setters in qualifying where he beat one of Australia’s rising stars Alexei Popyrin and Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania.

Paul had a promising junior career, reaching as high as No.3 in the ITF Junior rankings and he won the French Open Boy’s title in 2015. However, he has struggled immensely to make the transition at senior level, a bid largely not helped by a series of injuries.

The 22-year-old is currently at a career-high ranking of No.128 courtesy of his title win at the Sarasota Challenger and his runner-up finish at Tallahassee.

Paul famously ran Dominic Thiem close in the first round of the French Open a few months ago, and there is no doubt he will be buoyed to cause an upset against the unpredictable Italian.

Fognini v Paul Predictions & Tips

The odds are shortening fast and it is clear to see Tommy Paul has a very good chance of winning here. The American is a good technical player, and on his day he can play exceptional tennis. Fognini will need to produce something close to his best if he is to avoid a major upset.

Tip: Paul to win: 5/4 (888Sport)
