Svitolina, Looking a bit Rocky
The current WTA Finals champion Svitolina is heading into this fixture following a third-round defeat in the WTA San Jose Open just last week. The Ukranian was the favourite to go the distance, but Maria Sakkari pulled a stunner to reach the semis.
Similar instances have marked Svitolina’s time on the tour this season, most of which came into the picture only after she returned to the circuit following an injury break. At the start of the year, she was highly consistent and reached the penultimate round in many tournaments. However, due to lingering knee pain, she was forced to take some time off the tour.
When she came back, her form had certainly taken a sharp dip. With early exits in Madrid, Rome, and Paris, World No. 7 needed a good performance very soon. Luckily, she had that breakthrough in Wimbledon, where she reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
Now, she will be looking to repeat that same feat or better in Toronto too. Given the bracket she is in right now, her job is considerably easy.
Siniakova, in with a Good Start
With a win-loss record of 15-20 and just one win in her last five tournaments, Siniakova hasn’t had the best time on the tour of late. While she is a doubles prodigy in the making, having won the Wimbledon and French Open doubles last year, she hasn’t quite replicated the same on the singles circuit.
But at the same time, Siniakova has certainly had her moments in 2019. She was a semifinalist in Nuremberg and later, reached the fourth round in the French Open after dismantling Sakkari and Naomi Osaka. That performance alone should give Svitolina some concerns, heading into this fixture.
Svitolina v Siniakova Prediction & Tips
On paper, at least, Elina will start this match as the favourite to win. But given her lack of consistency in the past few months and Siniakova’s grit and motivation, the match may very well end up going either way. Expect this to be an entertaining affair.
