The two ladies have met only once on the tour, in the 2018 WTA Shenzhen last year. Halep won that fixture 6-4, 6-1.

As a top 10 player and a champion in several events, Simona Halep has time and again proven herself to be a master of the sport. She has many records to her name and most recently, won the Wimbledon title after defeating none other than Serena Williams in the final.
That was Halep’s first singles title in more than a year, with her last one being the Canadian Open. Since then, she reached the final in Qatar and Madrid, keeping herself afloat in the top five.
The Romanian, who has been seeded third for the tournament, holds a win-loss tally of 39-12. In the buildup to the US Open, she featured in the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Open, losing quite early in both the instances. In Toronto, however, it is worth mentioning that she retired from quarterfinal bout following a minor injury.

Gibbs, with a Chance to Make an Impression
Nicole Gibbs, currently ranked beyond the 130s, is a player who has spent most of her time competing on the ITF circuit. She has had some level of success there, reaching a total of three finals this season.
She hasn’t been that active on the WTA Tour, as such. Even in the handful of events she played in, she never made it past the early rounds. At the same time, Gibbs will be hoping for a better time in the US Open, given that this is where she won her maiden Grand Slam match.
In the 2014 edition of the tournament, she reached the third round after moving past some big names like Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Halep v Gibbs Predictions & Tips
Ordinarily, Halep would start this match as the favourite but things are a bit different this time around. For one, the Romanian has lost her opening matches at the Flushing Meadows over the last two years. Plus, Gibbs is a player who can very well cause a massive upset here. Even though Halep will be expected to win this one, it may not be an easy win for her.
