US Open 2019: Barty Stretched by Diyas, Pliskova, Nishikori Advance

Second seeded Ash Barty was stretched to three sets by Zarina Diyas in her first round of the 2019 US Open while Karolina Pliskova was a straight-set winner to advance to the second round.

Barty, who had earlier won the French Open this year and climbed to the top ranking in the world – dethroning Naomi Osaka from the perch for a while – was stunned in the first set, 6-1 before she roared back to win the next two against Diyas. She came through 6-3, 6-2 in the final two sets.

In the first match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, world number three Karolina Pliskova needed two tie-breakers to get the better of countrywoman Tereza Martincova. She won 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3) to advance to the second round. There were 12 service breaks in the encounter before both sets went into the tie-breaker.

Pliskova, who is a former finalist at the US Open, will now take on Mariam Bolkvadze in the second round. She overcame Bernarda Pera in three sets to advance to her first ever second round.

In men’s singles action, Kei Nishikori was leading by a set and 4-1 in the second before his opponent Marco Trungelliti withdrew from the encounter.

Britain’s women had mixed luck on day one with Johanna Konta winning in three sets against Daria Kasatkina while Harriet Dart going down in straight sets to Ana Bogdan. Konta won 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 while Dart, who had to make it through to the main draw through the qualifiers went down 3-6, 1-6 to Bogdan.

Anastasija Sevastova defeated former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-3, while Ekaterina Alexandrova brushed former champion and wildcard entrant Samantha Stosur away in straight sets as well. Ons Jabeur surprised the 27th seeded Caroline Garcia while Tomas Berdych was sent packing in the first round by Jenson Brooksby, who won 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Petra Martic, Rebecca Peterson, Blaz Klahn and Dusan Lajovic were some of the other early winners on day one of the competition.
