Stan Wawrinka v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

Wawrinka and Chardy have met five times on tour, with the Swiss man winning all five encounters. However, their last match was over three years ago at the 2016 French Open.

Wawrinka Seeks To Maintain Unbeaten Record Against Frenchman

Stan Wawrinka needed his powers of escapology to see off Italy’s fast-rising youngster Jannik Sinner in the opening round. The three-time Grand Slam champion dropped the third set, but regrouped hold off a spirited fightback from the youngest man inside the ATP’s Top 300.

Wawrinka will need to make slight improvements to his game if he is to reach the business end of the tournament, but he will be pleased with his overall display particularly his solid serve (broken only four times over four sets) and his signature backhand down-the-line.

The former champion’s reward is a winnable second round meeting against a man he has never lost to – Jeremy Chardy.

The Swiss superstar has beaten the Frenchman in all five meetings, dating back to their first meeting in Madrid in 2009. Their most recent encounter was at Roland Garros in 2016, and a lot has changed since then.

The number 23 seed underwent double knee surgery in the last couple of years and is still seeking for consistency to be back in the winners’ circle. There is much to admire about Wawrinka’s mental resilience in dealing with his injury troubles – much like his rivals Federer and Djokovic who both battled back injuries to win majors again – and perhaps it is only a matter of when rather than if Stan Wawrinka will win again.

Chardy Came Through A Tough Opener

Jeremy Chardy – much like Wawrinka – produced his very own feat of escape. The Frenchman beat the newest ATP titlist Hubert Hurkacz (winner at Winston-Salem) in a marathon five-setter to book his spot in the second round.

Chardy still has a lot to do if he is to equal his best-ever showing at the US Open, which was a fourth round appearance in 2015, but take nothing away from the 32-year-old who recorded an impressive win against one of the ATP’s breakout stars in 2019.

There is cause for concern though in the Chardy camp since he hasn’t played a lot of tennis in the build-up to the US Open and retired last week in his second round match against Frances Tiafoe at Winston-Salem.

Wawrinka v Chardy  Predictions & Tips

Wawrinka leads the series 5-0 and will start as heavy favorite to progress. There is nothing to suggest an upturn in fortunes for Chardy despite his win against Hurkacz. It would be a real shock if the Swiss man falls here.

Tip: Wawrinka to win in straight sets: 6/4 (888Sport)
