Konta Starts her Journey in NY
In the last couple of editions of the US Open, Johanna Konta succumbed to defeat right in the first round. However, this time around, she finally managed to break that jinx by defeating Daria Kasatkina in the opener in three sets. It was a major scare for the Brit, who lost the first set rather cheaply to get back in the match.
All things considered, that win was a much-needed one for Konta. On the North American hard courts in recent weeks, she went by without a single win. In Toronto and Cincinnati, she succumbed surprisingly to the likes of Dayana Yastremska and Rebecca Peterson in the openers.
World No. 16 has had quite a season up until now, having reached the semifinal in Wimbledon and the quarterfinal at the French Open. She was also the runner-up in the Morocco Open and Italian Open – the two key tournaments where she reignited her form. Bit by bit, she fought her way back into the top 20 and now, looks to go beyond.
Gasparyan, Hoping to Cause Ripples
Despite the fact that the 24-year-old Russian has had a very slow season so far, she can still expect to inflict some damage to Konta in her second-round bout at the Flushing Meadows.
The Tashkent Open champion hasn’t looked that formidable on the whole with a strike rate of 14-16. In fact, she was on a three-match losing streak up until she arrived in New York, where she defeated Priscilla Hon in the opener to finally subdue her form demons.
Gasparyan has spent most of the season attempting to move past the early rounds. The only breakthrough she has had of sorts came in Istanbul, where she reached the semifinal.

Konta hasn’t looked that sharp in recent weeks as she was on the grass and clay courts. She is prone to defeats and that is something that Gasparyan can use to her advantage. This will be an interesting match to follow, where Konta will start as the favourite. It may very well be another three-setter but if the Brit can keep her focus, she should come out of it unscathed.
