Alexander Zverev v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, with Zverev leading their head to head series by three matches to one. Significantly, two of the German’s victories came in Grand Slams – at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2017, whilst the third came in the Paris Masters last year.

Tiafoe’s solitary success came at the Cincinnati Masters in 2017, when he battled back from a set down.

Zverev Relieved to Reach Second Round

Tuesday was a day of carnage for men seeded in the top ten for this year’s US Open. Within the space of a few hours, Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Karen Khachanov, and Roberto Bautista-Agut, all found themselves dumped out of this year’s tournament.

And, for a short while, it seemed that Zverev was about to join that roster of names. Two sets up and cruising against Radu Albot, he allowed the Moldovan to get back into the match, and level it up at two sets all. Fortunately, the 22-year old German found another gear, regained his rhythm, and was able to pull away in the final set to close out the match.

On the eve of the tournament, Zverev had disclosed that off-field issues had distracted him this year, meaning that he had failed to produce his best tennis on court. The subsequent announcement that he is going to sign with Roger Federer’s management company may be an indication that he can now concentrate on playing again, and getting back to the form that made him so heavily backed for this season.

Tiafoe Benefits from Karlovic Retirement

By contrast, Tiafoe had a relatively easy first round match against the veteran Croat, Ivo Karlovic, who was complaining about stomach pains throughout the first two sets of the match, which Tiafoe won easily. Eventually, after three games of the third set, it proved too much for the 40-year old, and he was forced to retire, handing the match to the American.

Whilst not necessarily the best way to win, Tiafoe was happy to take it, especially as it gave him extra rest ahead of his meeting with Zverev.

This is the 21-year old fifth time in the main draw here, but only the second time that he has made the second round, repeating his feat of last year. He will be hoping to progress further, knowing that he will get patriotic support from the home crowd on Thursday.

Zverev v Tiafoe Predictions & Tips

Zverev is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 9/13, whilst Tiafoe is priced at 27/20. The German had a marathon match on Tuesday, whilst Tiafoe had a much easier time of it. Despite this, and the fact that major seeds have become an endangered species at Flushing Meadows this year, the German should eventually win.

Tip:  Zverev to win in four sets: 10/3 (888Sport)
