The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the world number 25, and the Australian, ranked 30 places below him.
Berrettini, First Time in Second Round
This is only the second time that the Italian has featured in the main draw at Flushing Meadow, Berrettini recording his maiden victory in the tournament on Tuesday, with an impressive fourth round win over the experienced French competitor Richard Gasquet.
Berrettini is much better known for his exploits on a clay court, where he has won two senior ATP career titles – the Swiss Open last year, and the Hungarian Open in Budapest this year. He has also shown some facility on grass. He was a surprise winner of the Stuttgart Open in June, his third senior title in all, and then went on to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon, his best showing yet in a Grand Slam event.
Since Wimbledon, the only event he contested was the Cincinnati Masters where he went out in the first round, so he was well rested ahead of this event.

Thompson, A Solid Australian Pro in Action
Thompson is the type of player who always offers a challenge, whichever type of surface he is playing on, without yet having the all-round game to reach the next level. Six years a pro, it took until this year for him to reach his first senior ATP final, losing to Adrian Mannarino on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch in June.
Apart from that, he reached the semi-finals in Antalya, and was the beaten finalist at the Challenger event in Nanchang, China.
He has a generally poor record in Grand Slams, with his best showing coming at the French Open this year when he got to the third round.
The 25-year old’s previous appearance in the second round here came two years ago, when he beat the 13th seed Jack Sock before going out to Thomas Fabbiano. However, after cruising past the Portuguese clay court specialist Joao Sousa of Portugal on Tuesday in straight sets, he will rate his chances highly of taking his place in the third round.

Berrettini is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 8/13, whilst Thompson is priced at 8/5. Whoever wins this match, and reaches the third round, will be in virgin territory as far as the US Open is concerned, so there is a lot at stake for both men. Seeded players have not had the best of times so far at Flushing Meadow so far this week, and another one could go here.
