John Isner v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

Between 2014 and 2016, these two players played each other thrice and Isner won every single time. This includes a US Open win in 2014 at this very stage in the second round.

Isner Looking To Gain Momentum After Convincing Opener

US number one John Isner had a phenomenal 2018, winning his first ever ATP Masters 1000 in Miami, and playing an epic Wimbledon semi-final against Kevin Anderson that he lost 24-26 in the fifth, among other positive results.

The American broke into the top ten of the ATP rankings and even made an appearance at the year end ATP Finals in London, in the absence of Rafael Nadal.

2019 has not been a particularly good season for Isner with him getting injured playing his second consecutive Miami final, which he lost to Roger Federer and failing to defend his title.

His recovery from being out for a few months thereafter has been shaky, with a below par performance on the North American hard courts with atypical early departures in Atlanta, Washington D.C, Montreal and Cincinnati.

Isner had a strong opening outing at the US Open defeating Spain’s Guillermo Garcia Lopez in straight sets.

Stuff Hoping To Get Through Week 1 At a Major

German Jan- Lennard Struff is in the midst of the best season of his career. The 29-year-old has been on the circuit for more than five years and reached his highest ranking on the tour of number 33. He is currently ranked 35th.

Struff had his best Grand Slam result at the French Open this year, where he made the fourth round before losing to Novak Djokovic. He followed it with a third round showing at Wimbledon.

The German has strung together good results through various ATP tournaments including defeating top ten players like Alexander Zverev at Indian Wells and Marin Cilic last year in Tokyo.

Struff has a big serve, backed by solid groundstrokes on either wing and has the ability to come to the net successfully as well.

In the first round, he defeated young Norwegian Casper Ruud in straight sets.

John Isner v Jan-Lennard StruffPredictions & Tips

This promises to be an exciting battle on the cards, with two men that have equally matched big serves. Isner has not performed as well as he typically does in the US Open series and has been low on confidence since his return from injury earlier in the year.

Struff on the other hand has had a promising season with consistent performances at various ATP tournaments, but has been found wanting mentally on the big occasions.

If both players play to their potential, this could go either way. However, Isner is typically known to do well at his home slam, egged on by the New York crowd. Isner looked good in his opener and expect him to carry it forward for a tight four set win with a couple of tiebreaks.

Tip: Isner to win: 10/13 (888Sport)
