Naomi Osaka had barely any difficulties in overcoming Poland’s Magda Linette in her second round encounter at the 2019 US Open.

With rain having replaced by sunshine, Osaka wasted no time in breezing past the Polish player 6-2, 6-4 to set up a potential match-up against Cori Gauff in the third round.

Linette, who had beaten Osaka in Washington last year, had already emulated her best result at Flushing Meadows by making it to the second round by beating Australia’s Astra Sharma in the first round. And she started confidently, sharing the spoils in the first four games of the opening set.

However, once Osaka found her rhythm, there was no looking back as she reeled in four games in a row to clinch the set. Linette’s confidence from having won the title at Bronx last week after coming through as a qualifier, shone through in the second set but she failed to convert those opportunities.

Linette had her chances in the second set when she broke Osaka early and raced to a 3-0 lead. However that joy was short-lived as the Japanese world number one came back to level things up and then broke Linette for the second time in the set to take a 5-3 lead.

While Linette managed to hold on to her service game to push Osaka to serve it out, there were no nerves for the top seed. Osaka will now have to wait for the match between the wild-card Gauff and qualifier Timea Babos for her third round opponent.

In another men’s singles match for a place in the third round, Britain’s Daniel Evans defeated Lucas Pouille in four sets. He won 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to set up a meeting against the third seeded Roger Federer. Federer had beaten Damir Dzumhur in his second round match on Wednesday.
