Roger Federer v Daniel Evans Head to Head

The two players have met twice and Federer won on both occasions. Their first meeting was at Wimbledon in 2016, which Federer won in straight sets relatively convincingly. Their next encounter was earlier this year at the Australian Open, where Evans pushed Federer to tie breaks in the first two sets, but it was still a straight set win for the Swiss.

Federer Looking To Get Over First Set Hiccups

In his first two rounds, Swiss maestro Roger Federer has got off to shaky starts losing the first set on both occasions. While he has played lesser opponents, i.e. qualifier Sumit Nagal and Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia, the Swiss has not managed to get off the blocks at the level he would like, resulting in a low first serve percentage and a flurry of errors.

In both his matches, Federer has got better as the match has improved and won in four sets, winning the next three sets rather comfortably. However, he will like to get into his rhythm sooner in matches to come as the opponents get more challenging.

Federer is playing his 19th US Open and has won the title on five consecutive occasions from 2004-2008. The Swiss has had a good season winning titles in Dubai, Miami and Halle and being a finalist at Wimbledon, and Indian Wells. He will be looking for a 21st Grand Slam title to further his position at the top of the major titles count.

Evans Comeback Year Looking For More Impetus

British player Daniel Evans, started the year ranked outside the top 500 on the ATP circuit, after a career-high number 41 ranking in 2017.

Once looked upon as being “extremely talented and promising”, and winning the LTA Male Junior Player of the Year in 2008, Evans’ career ran into disciplinary issues, largely due to his off-court behavior. The most notable incident being his 12 month ban, in April 2017, after testing positive for cocaine. Such recurring incidents got him the unwanted nickname of the “Bad Boy of British Tennis”

Evans’ has been part of successful British Davis Cup teams and is well remembered for his 2nd round victory against Marin Cilic in the 2017 Australian Open. Evans made the round of 16 that year, his best Grand Slam result till date.

2019 has been a relatively consistent season for the Briton with him losing the final at the Delray Beach Open ATP 250 to Romanian Radu Albot after having championship points. He also made the third round at Wimbledon and has done well to make the rounds of 16 and 32 at other ATP tournaments this year. All of these have brought him back to being ranked number 44 in the world currently.

Evans has had two convincing victories thus far at the US Open against Frenchmen Adrian Mannarino and Lucas Pouille.

Roger Federer v Daniel Evans Predictions & Tips

The two players know each other’s games well, as they have practiced a fair bit together. Both have single handed backhands and that makes for some spectacular shot making.

Evans and Federer met earlier this year and that made for an enticing second round encounter at the Australian Open.

Although Federer has looked shaky early on in both his matches, and Evans has had a strong season, it is difficult to see him beating Federer in a best of five sets at a major.

Expect Federer to start better this time around, and win a tight battle against a spirited Evans in straight sets.

Tip: Federer to win in straight sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
