Hubert Hurkacz v Gregoire Barrere Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice, with each player having won one match apiece. Hurkacz won in the France F20 Futures tournament in 2017, whilst Barrere won their meeting at the Challenger event in Quimper earlier this year.

Hurkacz, Breakthrough Year on Tour

It is a sign of the progress that Hurkacz has made this year that the 22-year-old Pole is now seeded for a tournament like this.

Already known as a promising junior, he first came to wider attention earlier this year with a couple of back-to-back eye-catching wins over Kei Nishikori, in Dubai, and then in Indian Wells, where he went on to reach the quarter finals.

He established a reputation as a solid tournament player and, at Wimbledon, reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Then last month, at Winston-Salem in the United States, he achieved the career breakthrough he had been promising for some time, winning his first ATP career title.

En route to the final there, he beat the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Denis Shapovalov, before overcoming the challenge of France’s Bruno Paire.

At six feet five inches, he is one of the biggest hitters on tours, who plays solidly from the back of the court and possesses a dangerous serve.

Barrere Reaches His Highest Career Ranking

25-year-old Barrere, after seven years as a professional, has just reached his highest career ranking of 98 in the world. He is much better known on the junior tours than the senior ATP circuit – he has won six ITF and 3 Challenger Tour tournaments, the most recent of which came in Lille in March. A month earlier, he had also won the event in Quimper, beating Hurkacz in the process.

On the senior tour, he was given a wildcard at Roland Garros where he beat Matthew Ebden of Australia in the first round before losing to Karen Khachanov of Russia.

He then came through qualifying at Wimbledon, and again reached the second round, eventually losing to compatriot Lucas Pouille. And he also qualified for the main US Open draw, yet again progressing to the second round, before losing at the hands of David Gofffin of Belgium.

Hurkacz v Barrere Predictions & Tips

Hurkacz is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 4/9, whilst Barrere is priced at 19/10. Barrere did beat the Pole en route to the Challenger title in Quimper earlier this year, but since then Hurkacz has enjoyed success on the senior ATP tour and has become battle-hardened, He should win with ease.
