Gael Monfils v Cameron Norrie Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, on grass at Eastbourne in 2017. Monfils won that match easily in straight sets.
Monfils Valiant Loser at US Open
33 year old Monfils won his 8th senior ATP title in Rotterdam earlier this year, a week after he was the beaten finalist in Sofia. He then followed that up by getting to the semi-finals in Dubai, and making the last eight in Indian Wells.
For the next few months he struggled to reproduce that early season form, losing in the third round at Roland Garros and forced to withdraw midway through his first round match at Wimbledon with injury.
However, he staged something of a recovery in Montreal, where he reached the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup, only for injury to rob him again of the chance to compete with Rafael Nadal for a place in the final. He then got to the quarter-finals at the US Open, pushing Matteo Berrettini all the way before losing on a fifth set tie-break.

24 year old Norrie has a mixed heritage. Born in South Africa, he represented New Zealand as a junior before switching his international allegiance to Great Britain, the nationality of both his parents. He has since gone on to play for his adopted nation in the Davis Cup.
He has never won a senior ATP title, but came close in Auckland at the start of this year when he got to the final, only to lose to Tennys Sandgren of the USA. Since then he made the semi-finals in Acapulco, where he lost to Alexander Zverev, and again in Atlanta, where he suffered defeat at the hands of Taylor Fritz.
Norrie got his campaign in China off to a successful start by beating Peter Gojowczyk of Germany in straight sets on Monday.

Monfils is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 1/4, whilst Norrie is 14/5. The Frenchman won the only previous meeting between these two, and there is no evidence to suggest that the result will be any different this time.
