Lloyd Harris v Alexander Bublik Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the two 22-year olds.

Bublik Eyeing Second ATP Final This Year

Bublik has had most of his success this year on the ATP Challenger tour, where he has won three titles. But now he has the chance to make his second senior final ever, after his efforts at the Hall of Fame championships in Newport, Rhode Island in July, contesting for the title before he was eventually beaten by John Isner.

He may never have a better chance to clinch his maiden ATP tournament success, with so many of the men ahead of him in the world rankings already knocked out. He has helped his own cause substantially by contributing to the demise of some of those players this week.

First, he beat the number six seed, Taylor Fritz, in three sets in the first round, before seeing off the challenge of the Australian Jordan Thompson in the second, relatively comfortably. Then he pulled off a major surprise by defeating the US Open semi-finalist, Grigor Dimitrov, on Friday, winning their three-set battle on a tie-break in the third.

Harris, A Lucky Loser Flourishing in Chengdu

For the man known as “The King” by his South African Davis Cup team mates, this is a new experience. Although he has had a fair degree of success on the ITF Futures and ATP Challenger tours, accumulating 16 titles, the most recent of which came in Launceston, Australia in February, this will be his first ever senior ATP semi-final.

It represents a major surprise for a man who has only ever won one Grand Slam match, and has a solitary victory in Masters events to his name.

He only got into the main draw in Chengdu as a lucky loser, having been knocked out of qualifying by American Bradley Klahn. Still, he has grabbed the chance he has been given with both hands. First, he beat Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in three sets in the first round, and then overcame the challenge of Dusan Lajovic, this time in straight sets, in the second.

On Friday, he recorded his best result of the week yet, defeating the challenge of the experienced Portuguese player, Joao Sousa, again in three sets.

Harris v Bublik Predictions & Tips

Bublik is the marginal favourite to win this match at 5/6, whilst Harris is priced at 20/21. Whilst both men are inexperienced at this level, Bublik has, at least, made an ATP final before, whilst this is completely new territory for the South African. That extra experience should be enough to give the man from Kazakhstan the edge.

Tip: Bublik to win in straight sets: 7/4 (888Sport)
