Karen Khachanov v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

This will be a first-ever meeting on tour between Khachanov and Chardy.

Khachanov’s Hopes Of Qualifying At The O2 Fading Fast

Almost 12 months ago, Karen Khachanov came within a whisker of qualifying for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in London following a sensational run to his maiden Masters 1000 crown in Bercy. The Russian’s success at the Paris Masters put him as first alternate at the O2 last year, and even though Khachanov along with Coric traveled to London, there were no subsequent withdrawals.

A lot of people (myself included) felt that this would be his breakout season in terms of ranking and success at the biggest events on the calendar. However, it was Khachanov’s fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev who took the tennis world by storm, particularly during the North American hard-court season.

Khachanov hasn’t been able to kick on from the thrills of his 2018 season as he battled to fight illness during the early part of the year and inconsistent run of form during the second half of the season.

After a promising run to the semifinals of Rogers Cup where he attempted to salvage his season, the 22-year-old was sent packing in the first round of the US Open in a shocker against Vasek Pospisil. To make matters worse, he would also lose at the first hurdle in his country at the St. Petersburg Open to Joao Sousa.

The fourth seed will return to Bercy at the end of the month to defend his title, and unless he can do the unthinkable and hit his peak form, his hopes of going to London are almost certainly over.

Chardy More Than Capable Of Upsetting Russian

Jeremy Chardy came through qualifiers and an earned an impressive first round win over Marco Cecchinato in three sets. The Frenchman has had his fair share of big wins this year in what is turning out to be a productive season, beating the likes of Winston-Salem winner Hubert Hurkacz in the US Open, clay-court specialists Cristian Garin and Diego Schwartzman (both on clay).

If Chardy is looking for inspiration he ought not look further than the shocking losses Khachanov has suffered this year with the harrowing of those coming against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor who beat the Russian in Rotterdam while ranked No.211 in the world.

The veteran Frenchman is certainly a better performer than Griekspoor and is looking to make a late push to finish in the World’s Top 50.

Khachanov v Chardy Predictions & Tips

Khachanov has suffered some shocking losses this year, and is only inside the Top 10 courtesy of that Paris win at the back end of last year. Once those points are wiped out his ranking will fall off a cliff. Chardy certainly represents good value to cause an upset here given how badly the Russian has played in 2019.

Tip: Chardy to win: 9/5 (888Sport)
