Dominic Thiem v Zhizhen Chang Head to Head

These two players have never played each other on tour before with this being their first meeting.

Thiem Looking to Find his Early Season Form Again

For Dominic Thiem, 2019 has been a tale of two halves. He began the year impressively by winning his biggest title yet at the Indian Wells which was followed by a victory at the Barcelona Open. He also had a semi-final run at Madrid Masters and reached his second consecutive French Open final where he once against lost to Rafael Nadal.

But since then his form has been patchy, and apart from the title victory in front of his home crowd at Kitzbuhel, his performances haven’t been up to his best.

The number one seed comes into the tournament after a disappointing first-round exit from the US Open as well as poor Davis Cup & Laver Cup showings.

He will be hoping to regain some of his early-season forms to end the year on a strong note. A good display this week will also certainly book his place for the year-ending ATP World Tour Finals considering he is fifth in the race at the moment while the four players ahead of him have already qualified for the event.

Zhizhen Zhang Flying High After Taking Out British Number One

The Chinese wildcard Zhang shocked everyone by beating world number 34 and British number one Kyle Edmund in the first round. Zhang had only ever won four matches on the ATP tour since turning pro back in 2012. Before last week’s Zhuhai, Open Zhang had not played a single match on the ATP tour this year.

Despite limited exposure at the ATP tour-level, Zhang has been a regular feature at the challenger and futures events. His victory in the Chinese Tennis Grand Prix earlier this year got him a wildcard entry to this week’s event in Beijing. With the local crowd in his support, he will be looking to cause the Austrian, Thiem some trouble.

He will surely move up from his already career-high 213 ranks when the next set of rankings are announced regardless of what happens in this match.

Dominic Thiem v Zhizhen Chang Predictions & Tips

Despite the upset that local boy Zhang caused in the first round, Thiem should not have any issues in getting past him. I expect a comfortable straight-sets victory for the Austrian as he moves to the quarter-finals.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets at 5/6 at 888Sport
