The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the world number 14 Monfils, and the Austrian, ranked more than 100 places below him.

Monfils with a Mixed 2019

Monfils has had a mixed year. He had a very good start to 2019, winning his 8th senior singles career title in Rotterdam, making the semi-finals in Sofia and Dubai, and the last eight in Indian Wells and Estoril.

But then came a mid-season slump where he seemed to be scratching around for form and consistency, until be bounced back by reaching the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

He followed that up by a run to the quarter-finals in Flushing Meadows, where he eventually lost out to Matteo Berrettini after an epic battle that went to a fifth set tie-break.

Since then he made the quarter-finals in Zhuhai. but was beaten in the second round in Shanghai, and again last week at the European Open in Antwerp, where he began the tournament as the number one seed.

Novak, an Austrian Wildcard Looking for Deeper Run

26 year old Novak is much better known as a player on the junior tours, where he has won 23 ITF Futures titles and one Challenger event, in Taipei, in April of this year. He was also a beaten finalist in the Challenger tournament in Ilkley, England, in June.

In terms of the main tour, his best result came on the doubles’ court, when, together with his partner and countryman Dominic Thiem, they were beaten in the final of the Austrian Open three years ago.

This year his best results on the main tour have been two second round appearances – in Bastad, Sweden, where he lost to Richard Gasquet, and in Kitzbuhel, where he was defeated by Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay.

Monfils v Novak Predictions & Tips

Monfils is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 2/9, whilst Novak is priced at 74/17. As an Austrian player Novak is sure to have warm local support but there is little in his recent results or history to suggest he has the game to defeat somebody of the calibre or Monfils.

Tip: Monfils to win in straight sets: 4/6 (888Sport)
