Dominic Thiem v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

The pair have met four times in their career. And the Spaniard has won all of them. Their most recent meeting was on the clay courts of Rome earlier this year. The Spaniard won in three sets on that occasion.

Thiem Looking for the Fifth Title of the Season

26 year old has had a stellar 2019 so far. He is on course to end the year in the top 10 for the fourth year running. And apart from winning four titles this season, he has also reached the semi-finals at the Madrid Masters and the finals at the French Open.

He goes into this match on the back of an impressive straight-sets victory over Frenchman Jo-Wilfred Tsonga. He has also won eight out of the last nine matches on tour. With qualification to the season-ending ATP Tour finals in London secured, he now will be looking to close the gap between him and the players above him, especially Roger Federer. The Swiss maestro is the defending champion at Basel this week and is defending 500 ranking points.

Thiem can still end the year in the top three, and he must ensure that he goes deep into the tournament this week.

Verdasco Looking to put Davis Cup Disappointment Behind

Just two days ago, Verdasco went on record to express his disappointment on not being selected in Spain’s Davis Cup team. He was hoping to play for his country for one last time in his home city, Madrid.

He seems to have put the disappointment behind him as he came through a hard-fought three-set victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round. An early exit this year will result in his rankings dropping out of the top 50 first time since 2016.

Since the Wimbledon this year, Verdasco has played in nine tournaments, failing to win more than one match in all of them. With a win-loss record of 27-26 this year, he in danger of ending the year with more losses than victories, the first time in his career.

The highlight of the Spaniards season was the quarter-final run in Rome earlier this year, where he lost to Rafael Nadal. His last semi-final appearance on the tour came at the same event last year.
