The pair have once before in the first round of this same event four years ago, Paire coming from a set down to win the match.
Monfils Has Had a Mixed 2019
It has been a mixed year for 33-year old Monfils. It started well with victory in Rotterdam, giving him an eight senior singles title, and he made the last four in Sofia and Dubai, and the quarter finals in Indian Wells and Estoril.
However, a mid-season slump then ensued, and it was only at the Rogers Cup in Montreal that he got back to some semblance of form, reaching the semi-finals.
Subsequent to that he got to the last eight in Flushing Meadows, losing an epic battle with Matteo Barrettini of Italy in a fifth set tie-break.
Since then he has been a quarter-finalist in Zhuhai and made the semis in Vienna last week, where he lost to Diego Schwartzman in straight sets.

Paire, with a Much-Improved 2019 Season
30-year-old Paire has had his best year on tour since turning professional, reaching three finals, and winning two of them – in Morocco and Lyon. He was also runner-up in the Challenger event in Marbella.
Most of his best performances have come on clay, although he was a beaten finalist in Winston Salem, and a semi-finalist in Metz.
Despite this being a home event though, Paire has a terrible record in this event. That 2015 victory over Monfils was only the second time previously he had made the second round here, the first being in 2012.
Therefore, his first round victory on Monday over the Bosnian Damir Dzumhur means that he has at least emulated those previous achievements.

Monfils is the favourite to win this match at 5/6, whilst Paire is priced at 27/20. Whilst Paire won their only previous match at this same event, that was four years ago, and not a reliable guide to current form. Generally, Monfils is the more accomplished player on hard courts and should have the edge in this all-French showdown.
