Caroline Wozniacki v Julia Goerges Head to Head

Mouth-watering is the term used in the introduction to describe this contest between the former world number one Wozniacki and the two-time defending champion Goerges and there’re a couple of reasons for it. One, they are so closely matched on the rankings table, with Wozniacki 39th and Goerges at the 41st spot.

More vitally, these two players have played each other on 10 previous occasions and Goerges holds a 6-4 advantage over Wozniacki. This includes a 3-0 for Goerges over the past three matches, including the 2018 Auckland Open final in which the German player won the title in straight sets. They had played in the 2017 Auckland Open too where Goerges had won the quarter-final while in 2015, in the same tournament was Wozniacki’s last victory over the German.

Wozniacki Pushed by Lauren Davis

Wozniacki made it two wins in two matches in 2020 with a thrilling three-set victory over American Lauren Davis. She needed nearly two and a half hours to get past the winner of the 2017 edition and will now hope she can repeat the dose with the 2018 and 2019 winner.

The Dane won the first set easily but once Davis found some sort of rhythm with her serving, she came into her own by winning the second set. Interestingly, Davis, who had defeated Angelique Kerber in the second round last Wimbledon took a 3-1 lead in the final set, but Wozniacki retaliated with a break of serve to love and levelled the set at 3-3.

Three more breaks of serves followed, giving Wozniacki a chance to serve out the match and this time she made no mistake.

The 2018 Australian Open winner has opted to retire following the first major of 2020 and had earlier crushed Paige Hourigan to make it to the second round.

Goerges Makes it Another Straight-Set Win

Goerges continued to exhibit the kind of confidence that had helped her win back to back titles, beating Jil Teichmann in the second round in straight sets. She won 6-3, 6-2 to march into the last-eight, setting up this encounter with Wozniacki. Earlier she had gotten past Greet Minnen in round one, winning in straight sets as well.

Having won back to back titles in Auckland, Goerges was once ranked ninth in the world, but a poor run of form in 2019 following the Auckland Open win left her ranked 41st at the start of this season. In fact, it might have been a lot worse had it not been for her year-end run at the Luxembourg Open in 2019 where she made it to the final before losing to Jelena Ostapenko.

Auckland and Luxembourg Open aside, Goerges had an 18-19 win-loss record last year and her opponent could do well to study tapes of where the German was struggling in that interim period last season.
