Elina Svitolina v Katie Boulter Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the Ukrainian, aged 25, and the Briton, who is two years younger.

Kvitova, 2019 Melbourne Finalist

The winner of the WTA Finals in 2018 and losing finalist to Ashley Barty in Shenzen last October, Svitolina reached two Grand Slam semi-finals last year, at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows. She also was a beaten quarter-finalist in Melbournein both the last two seasons.

That is the closest she has come to winning one of the sport’s biggest titles, and was part of the reason she decided to hire the Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis as coach in the close season, a man who knows what it is like to play in an Australian Open final – he was beaten at that stage by Roger Federer in 2006.

She will need a vast improvement on her first outing of the year, though. She was thrashed by Danielle Collins of the USA in straight sets in the first round of the Brisbane International, winning just two games.

Boulter Returning After Long Injury Lay-Off

Boulter is currently 317 in the world, but her ranking has been adversely affected by the fact that she missed eight months of last season because of injury. What tennis she did manage saw her achieve her best results when playing for Britain in the Federation Cup, helping them win promotion from Europe/Africa Zone One, before her long lay-off.

She takes her place in Melbourne because of her protected ranking, hoping to improve on a miserable record in Grand Slams, in which she has only ever won two matches – here at Melbourne last year, and at Wimbledon in 2018.

Her return to action in Adelaide last week did not go according to plan – she was beaten by Bernarda Pera of the United States in the qualifying competition.

Elina Svitolina v Katie Boulter Predictions & Tips

Svitolina is the overwhelming favourite to win this match against a woman currently ranked more than 300 places below her in the world. Any result other than a comprehensive straight sets victory for the Ukrainian would be a major surprise.

Tip: Svitolina to win in straight sets: 3/10 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
