Ash Barty v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

This will be their third meeting with both Barty and Tsurenko having won once apiece. Their first match had come way back in 2014 in a qualifier at Acapulco which Barty won but rather surprisingly, Tsurenko had her revenge in 2018 when she upset the Aussie at the Brisbane International in the first round in straight sets.

Mixed Start for Barty but the Momentum is Back

Barty had begun the season as the defending French Open champion and world number one with a lot of expectations riding on her. And when she fell to a straight-set defeat at the hands of Jennifer Brady in the second round of the Brisbane International, it was bit of a setback for sure.

It looked like Barty needed to get back to the drawing board to try and get back her mojo, as was evident by the manner in which she had to fight back from near-dead to win her opener at Adelaide. She needed three sets and 12 games in the final set to win her opener against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and then another three-setter against Danielle Collins in the semifinals.

In fact that match went into a final set tie-breaker before Barty edged out her opponent, before taking the title by beating Dayana Yastremska in the final. While the Adelaide International victory was anything but straightforward it would have battle-hardened Barty for this Australian Open where she will have to endure matches like these.

Tsurenko’s Major Fall in the Rankings

Tsurenko rose to a career-high of 23rd in the world in February 2019 but things have gone rather pear-shaped for her since.

Since her final appearance at the Brisbane International in 2019, Tsurenko has won just 10 of her 24 matches on all surfaces, with fitness issues ending the post-Wimbledon season for her last year. Her best showing was the third round at the French Open but having played very little tennis, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to watch her fall to 120th on the WTA rankings.

As luck would have it, she was left to face Elise Mertens in round one at the Shenzhen Open and was roundly beaten by the Belgian. In turn, she further dropped points. Now left with the gigantic task of taking on the world number one, the Ukrainian player will hope to get some rhythm going into the rest of the season.
