Anastasija Sevastova v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between the world no. 33 Sevastova and world no. 52 Tomljanovic, with the former winning both their previous encounters in Mallorca on grass.

Form a Concern for Sevastova

Knocked out of the first round in Brisbane by Sofia Kenin and the first round in Adelaide by Donna Vekic, Anastasija Sevastova has had a poor start to 2020, but the losing streak may not last long as she opens her Australian Open campaign against a lesser ranked player on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Latvian who reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open in 2018 after making the quarterfinals the previous two years, equalled her best performance at the Australian Open last year, where she reached the second week of the tournament only to be beaten by eventual champion Naomi Osaka in the fourth round. Having reached the last 16 at Melbourne Park only twice in her career, Sevastova would be hoping to match or even better her previous best this year. But to achieve that she would have to get her winning touch back.

The winner of 4 WTA singles titles, Sevastova won her last tournament in 2019, winning the Baltic Open at home in July. Since then, however, she has seen a decline in form and has had a poor 3-8 win-loss record in completed matches. But it takes just one match to regain the momentum and Sevastova would be hoping to do just that against Tomljanovic.

Tough Road Ahead for Tomljanovic

Having beaten Priscilla Hon in the first round in Brisbane and Yulia Putintseva in the first round in Adelaide, the Croatian-born Australian resident Tomljanovic comes into the tournament with a better record than her first round opponent.

However, when it comes to Grand Slams, Tomljanovic has had little success, with a fourth round appearance at the 2014 French Open being her best performance so far. At the Australian Open, she has never progressed ahead of the second round and was knocked out of the first round by Johanna Konta last year.

Yet to win a WTA title, Tomljanovic has been handed a tough draw in the tournament and will be looking for the crowds to get behind her to help her win at least a round. The road ahead won’t be easy though, because even if she beats Sevastova in the first round, she would potentially face Garbine Muguruza in the second and Elina Svitolina in the third.
