Petra Martic v Julia Goerges Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, in the quarter-final of Porteroz in 2008, and, much more recently, in the semi-final in Birmingham last year, with Goerges winning on both occasions.

Martic, Late Developer on Tour

After more than a decade on tour, Martic finally won her first WTA title at the age of 28 last year, beating Marketa Vondrousova in the final of the Istanbul Open. She would later reach the final of the Premier event in Zhengzhou before losing to Karolina Pliskova.

She also reached her first Grand Slam quarter final in Paris, and equalled her best ever run at Wimbledon, where she got to the fourth round.

Those results meant that, never having even been inside the top 30 in the world before, she ended the year inside the top twenty, at a comparatively late age compared to most of her peers.

She has a reasonable record in Melbourne, having reached the fourth round here two years ago, and the third this time last year.

Martic could only get to the second round in Auckland in her one warm-up tournament for this event, but got her campaign here off to a comfortable start, beating the potentially dangerous Christina McHale of the USA in straight sets.

Goerges, an Experienced German Competitor

The German number two is now 31, and in the later stages of a career that has seen her win 5 WTA titles, most recently in Auckland last year, appear in a Wimbledon semi-final, and reach the final of the doubles at the French Open.

Now ranked 39 in the world, Goerges has a solid record in Melbourne, having been to the fourth round here in the singles three times, and twice been a semi-finalist in the doubles. Like many of his best results though, they were a few years ago.

She came into the tournament in moderate form, having got to the quarter-finals in Auckland, and the second round in Adelaide, where she pushed Belinda Bencic close in their match before eventually losing to the world number seven.

Like her opponent, she got off to a gentle start here, easing past Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovenia, dropping just three games in the process.

Petra Martic v Julia Goerges Predictions & Tips

This is likely to be a close encounter between two evenly matched competitors. Martic is the seeded player, but Goerges has beaten her in the only two matches they have played together, and may start favourite to do so again.

Tip: Goerges to win in straight sets: 5/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
