Arya Sabalenka v Carla Suárez Navarro Head to Head

The pair have met three times on the tour so far. The Belarusian has won all three matches so far.

Sabalenka in Impressive Early Season Form

After ending last year with ten victories out of 11 matches, Sabalenka has been in solid form at the start of the new season. She did suffer an early-round exit from Shenzhen and took a wildcard entry into last week’s Adelaide Open. Sabalaneka reached the semifinals and looked better with each match she played.

She won three titles last year, Shenzhen, Wuhan, and the WTA Elite Trophy at the end of the year. She also broke into the top 10 rankings for the first time on the back of these impressive performances. The only thing that was lacking last year was a strong run at a Grand Slam. At any of the majors, she could not go past round three, which she achieved at the Australian Open.

This will be her third appearance at the event. It will be interesting to see how far she goes this year, considering that she has a relatively more straightforward half of the draw.

Suárez Navarro on a Five Match Losing Run

The 31-year-old Spaniard ended last season with three back to back losses. This season, the two matches she has played so far have resulted in two losses, one of which was in the qualifier round at Adelaide. For someone who was as high as number six in the world four years ago, the decline in the performances has been steady.

She has already announced that she will be retiring from professional tennis at the end of this season. The Spaniard came into prominence in 2008, where she reached the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros as a 19-year-old qualifier. She finished in the top 50 that year, the first of 12 consecutive years where she achieved it.

This will be her 11th appearance at the Australian Open. Her best runs have been in 2009, 2016 & 2018 where she reached the quarter-finals.

Arya Sabalenka v Carla Suárez Navarro Predictions & Tips

Sabalenka should progress through to the second round smoothly. Suárez Navarro of a few years earlier would have started this match as a firm favorite. But at the moment, she doesn’t have the game anymore to trouble the Belarusian.
