Jiri Vesely v Ilya Ivashka Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in the quarter-final of the Eckental Challenger event in Germany last November, Vesely winning in three sets before going on to claim the title.

Vesely, Former Combined World Junior Number One Player

A former junior world number one player in both singles and doubles, Vesely was once ranked as high as 33 in the world five years ago, when he reached two ATP finals in three months, winning in Auckland but suffering defeat at the Romania Open.

Since then though he has progressively slipped down the rankings, and is now outside the top 100, although he has enjoyed some limited success on the Challenger tour, that victory in Eckental being his first tournament win in 18 months.

Pune is his fourth event of the year so far. He lost in the second round of qualifiers for Doha, lost in the first round of the Challenger event in Bangkok, despite being the top seed, and then, in the second part of that tournament, reached the quarter final only to be beaten by the Italian Federico Gaio.

This week so far he has beaten local man Arjun Kadhe, in straight sets on Tuesday, and then the number seven seed Salvatore Caruso of Italy, again in straight sets on Wednesday.

Ivashka Started 2020 in Good Form

Like Vesely, Ivashka is 25 years old, and, like him, plays most of his tennis on the Challenger tour, where he has won two events, although the last of those victories came almost two years ago in Shenzen. He was a beaten finalist in Canberra a year ago though.

Ranked 80 in the world almost 12 months ago, he is now down at 153, an indication of how his performance levels have dipped in the intervening period.

However, having lost in the first round in Canberra this year, he did come through three rounds of qualifying to make the main draw in Melbourne. And, although he was beaten in the first round by Kevin Anderson, he pushed the former Grand Slam finalist all the way, and the South African only won the match in a fifth set tie break.

This week he has already beaten two higher ranked players, Evgeny Donskoy of Russia, and the third seed, Stefano Travaglia of Italy, both in straight sets.

Jiri Vesely v Ilya Ivashka Predictions & Tips

Neither of these men would normally expect to feature in the quarter final of a senior ATP event, but have taken advantage of a weakened field to advance to this stage. Vesely is the higher ranked player, but Ivashka is the man in form, and may start favourite.

Tip: Ivashka to win in three sets: 10/3 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
