Ricardas Berankis v Yuichi Sugita Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 29 year old Lithuanian and the Japanese player, two years his senior.

Berankis, Lithuania’s Most Successful Player Ever

Despite being Lithuania’s most successful player ever, Berankis has never won a senior ATP title, although he has made two finals, the Los Angeles Open in 2012 and the Kremlin Cup five years later.

However, he has been a consistent performer on the Challenger circuit where he has won thirteen events, including four in 2019 – in Rennes, Drummondville, Canada, Busan, South Korea, and Vancouver. That run of victories made last season the most successful year of a professional career that began 13 years ago.

He began his 2020 campaign in Doha but suffered a disappointing first round loss to Cem Ilkel of Turkey, a man ranked 125 places below him.

Berankis entered then the main draw in Melbourne, beating Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain to make the second round for the fourth time, only to lose to the American Sam Querry in four sets.

Given a first round bye in Pune, he then beat Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany in straight sets on Wednesday.

Sugita, Already Made One Challenger Final This Year

Less than two and a half years ago, Sugita was ranked as high as 36 in the world in the wake of winning his only senior ATP title, on the grass of Antalya in Turkey. Since then, his main successes, like that of his opponent on Friday, have come on the Challenger tour – he made four finals last year, and won two of them, in Binghamton, USA and Yokkaichi, Japan.

And he has already made one final this year, losing to the American J.J. Wolf in Noumea, New Caledonia.

From there he went to Melbourne, where he was given automatic qualification into the main draw at the Australian Open. He beat Elliot Benchetrit of France in the first round, but then was beaten by the Russian Andrey Rublev.

Pune is his first tournament since then. He began his campaign by beating Thomas Fabbiano of Italy in the first round, and then had a walkover, after his prospective second round opponent, Viktor Troiki of Serbia, withdrew.

Ricardas Berankis v Yuichi Sugita Predictions & Tips

This is likely to be a closely-fought affair, with little to choose between them on paper. However, Berankis is the higher ranked player for a reason, and may just have the edge in this encounter, which could well go to three sets.

Tip: Berankis to win in three sets: 7/2 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
