Fabio Fognini v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

After having played each other twice in their career, this will be the third match between them. Both those previous encounters came in 2019 on hard courts, with Khachanov winning at Beijing and Fognini replying in kind at the Shanghai Masters.

Slow Start but Fognini Made Fourth Round in Melbourne

Fognini’s only win at the ATP Cup came against John Isner, after he had lost to Casper Ruud and Daniil Medvedev in the first two matches. This was followed by a second round defeat at the Auckland Open having gotten an opening bye which took him to the Australian Open.

And while he did make it to the fourth round at the year’s first major, thing weren’t very easy. Reilly Opelka, the New York Open winner – a tournament which will be running in parallel with this one in Rotterdam – is a testing opponent for a first round match and he took Fognini to a fifth set.

This was followed by another five-setter in the second round where he won against Jordan Thompson before finally easing away to a straight-set win against Guido Pella. What would then be surprising is to see him go down to Tennys Sandgren in the fourth. He now begins his campaign with a very stiff opponent first up.

Khachanov’s Already Played 12 Matches

For a player who hasn’t gone the distance in any of the tournaments he’s played in, Khachanov’s 12 matches this year must rank as one of the most played in around a month of tennis for a top player.

The 17th-ranked Russian started out with three matches at the Abu Dhabi exhibition, featured at the ATP Cup where Russia made the semifinal and then participated in the Auckland Open and the Australian Open.

Khachanov did well to win four of the five matches he played at the ATP Cup but he would be ruing his defeat to Dusan Lajovic in the semifinal. A win there could have given Russia a chance to make the final. However, his best match of the year so far – and could well be one of the best of his career – came at Melbourne where he took Nick Kyrgios to five sets, four of which were tie-breakers and only had the Aussie winning it 10-8 in the final set.

Interestingly, Khachanov starts off as a favourite considering his better hard court results as compared to Fognini with bet365 offering a whopping 11/8 for a Fognini victory. Expect a longish match again with Khachanov to edge out Fognini.
