Ashleigh Barty v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

Three previous matches have resulted in Barty winning two and Muguruza pouching one. While Barty won their Hopman Cup match in 2019, Muguruza’s only win came in their encounter before that in Toronto in 2017.

Barty Didn’t Have to Take to Court

The Aussie world number one hasn’t spent too much time on court since her return at the end of the Australian Open. Having gotten knocked out of the tournament in the semifinals there, Barty took a break before returning to competitive tennis in this competition.

As the top seed, she had a first round bye and followed it up with an easy 6-3, 6-2 drubbing of Laura Siegemund in the second. And then in the third, Barty was expected to face her first real test in the form of the best player of the season so far, Elena Rybakina, but her opponent withdrew because of a strain.

Which means Barty will enter this match against Muguruza without too much competitive tennis under her belt. And that could be bit of an issue given Muguruza herself has been doing the playing and rustiness would be the last advantage Barty would have from the match.

That said, her straight-set win over Siegemund was way better than how she had began her season at Brisbane, losing in the first round there. So, it might not be that bad after all.

Muguruza Form Gunning for Newer Levels

There were traces of a struggle in Muguruza’s first round win over Daria Kasatkina but the manner in which she has demolished her opponents since has been something to watch. In her second round encounter, Ajla Tomljanovic was sent packing, winning just three games which set her up against Dayana Yastremska.

Yastremska is a dangerous opponent as many of the players have found over the past two years, but Muguruza got through in straight sets as well. She won five breaks of serves over Yastremska, but her biggest weapon was her first serve which she got in 83% of the time. And then won a whopping two-thirds of those points.

By the time Yastremska realised what hit her and tried to make a comeback in the second set, it was a case of too little, too late.

Muguruza has had a lot of miles in her this season already and for now, that should help her coming into this match against the world number one who might just be struggling with rustiness being her prime concern.
