Anett Kontaveit v Patricia Maria Tig Head to Head

Two matches played and both Kontaveit and Tig have won one apiece. Not that it counts for too much because both of those encounters came in 2015 and on the ITF tour. Not to mention they were played on hard courts, unlike this encounter which would be on clay.

Kontaveit Showing Signs of Best Performance

Estonia’s Kontaveit has won just one WTA title and it came on grass way back in 2017. It was also the season in which she finished with a solid 46-20 win-loss record and propelled herself in the WTA rankings but since then her form has been slightly up and down.

In 2018, for instance, she made it to the semifinal at three of the competitions she played and pushed on to the final at one of those three – in Wuhan. Last year too, there were a couple of semifinal places including one in Miami, but there have been other competitions in which the Estonian world number 22 has struggled.

This year, however, the signs of a better form were there. At the Australian Open itself, Kontaveit made it to her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal, defeating Belinda Bencic and Iga Swiatek on her way to that loss to Simona Halep.

This was followed by a Fed Cup showing which left her with a 4-0 win-loss record and while she would have loved to have done better in Dubai and Doha, it does look like her form is back. She featured in a couple of exhibition matches back home where she defeated Anastasia Sevastova and Jelena Ostapenko during the pandemic break.

Tig Climbing into Top 100

While Tig is ranked 85th in the world and lost in the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open earlier this year, it must be quickly added she has established herself as a solid player in the lower-tier tournaments.

She was the finalist at the Canberra ITF competition before the year’s first major and followed her early ouster in Melbourne with a runner-up trophy at Nonthaburi. She was forced to retire from the match because of fitness issues.

And then playing at the Hua Hin Open in Thailand, Tig made it to the semifinal before losing to Magda Linette. That showing helped her climb in the rankings from outside the top 100 to her current ranking.

Can she trouble Kontaveit though? It’s difficult to see that given her loss of momentum all these months.
