Leylah Fernandez v Shelby Rogers Head to Head
The two haven’t played each other at the WTA level but more recently were a part of the Grand Slam Tennis Tours MatchPlay and played each other twice. In the first match, Rogers came through in three tight sets, winning the final set in a tie-breaker and that was followed by Fernandez avenged it by winning the second one in another three-setter.

Ranked 120th in the world, Fernandez qualified for this event with a couple of easy wins during the qualifiers but wasn’t quite expected to do much more than put up bit of a fight in her opener against Sloane Stephens.
Fernandez shocked Stephens but more vitally did it with so much ease it seemed like she was the seeded, higher-ranked player, not one ranked outside the top 100.
And it’s not for the first time Fernandez has managed to cause a few tennis flutters. At Acapulco earlier this year she made it to the final as a qualifier, losing only to Heather Watson in the end.
A qualifier at the Australian Open, she was also a losing quarterfinalist at Monterrey and has gone from a season low 437th last year to being on the verge of breaking into the top 100 despite the season being as short as it has been.

Rogers Stretched by Doi
It was a tough battle for a place in the second round but one that Rogers finally won in three sets. She defeated Misaki Doi 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to set up this meeting with the Canadian.
Rogers had earlier played in a few tournaments during the pandemic break, heading into this one, winning all three matches on the clay courts of Young Kings Scholarship. And earlier this year, there was a second round at Shenzhen Open, a qualification for the Australian Open, and a title win at the Midlands ITF competition to boot as well.
At stake here is a place in the quarterfinals and some vital ranking points which help her break into the top 100. She has an opponent whom she has beaten recently too but the question is who has more confidence going into this one.
